Sci-Fi Planter Asset


Hey, I'm Jacob from team Shadow Realm. 

This is a planter asset that I made for our game. I wanted to keep it simple and clean, as It is meant to compliment the walls of our ship bridge. I spent a decent amount of time studying large leaves to get inspiration for the structure of the plants. At the same time I also wanted to strike a balance between realistic and exaggerated proportions to find the right feel for the ship. I also wanted to model the leaves physically, rather than just falling back on using alphas. Which presented an interesting challenge for keeping poly count under control.

I managed to keep the poly count right at 8,000 for the whole object. I took advantage of 3DS MAX's Free Form Deformer modifier to create some variation between each leaf shape.. Most of my time on this model was spent painting the leaf material, it is a combination of a base and secondary color, using a generator to create a gradient, and a normal map to define the veins. I also used a specular map with some noise to create the unique glint found on leaves.
